How to Care for Your New Sod: The First 30 Days Matter Most

Installing new sod is one of the fastest ways to achieve a beautiful lawn- but its long-term success depends on what you do next. The first month after installation is critical, and following the proper watering, treatment, and care plan will determine whether your lawn thrives or struggles.

Proper Irrigation Is Essential

Your irrigation schedule following sod installation is the single most important factor in successful establishment. The University of Florida recommends the following approach:

  • First 7-10 days: Water 3 times per day for 5-10 minutes per zone, applying this only to zones with new sod.
  • Second 7-10 days: Once the sod shows light resistance when lifted, reduce watering to once daily in the early morning for 20-30 minutes per zone.
  • Third 7-10 days:

    • Spring/Summer: Water 4–6 days per week
    •
    • Late Fall/Winter: Water 3–4 days per week
  • After the first month: Transition to your normal programmed watering schedule.

Protect Against Fungus Early

Because new sod requires frequent watering to establish roots, it also creates ideal conditions for fungal growth. A fungicide application within the first week is critical to protect your investment. In fact, most sod installers will not warranty new sod if fungicide is not applied promptly, as fungus can quickly damage or destroy a new lawn.

Fertilizer Timing Matters

Granular fertilizers are typically delayed until about 30 days after installation, since immature roots can’t absorb nutrients efficiently. However, we recommend an early foliar potassium application applied by a turfgrass professional to encourage root strength and development during the initial establishment phase. After the first month, a starter fertilizer is applied to ensure balanced nutrient availability.

Stay Off the Lawn

New sod is under significant stress after being harvested and installed. Avoid walking on your lawn for at least two weeks, except when necessary for watering. Do not mow until roots are established and always use a push mower for the first 1-2 cuts to prevent damage.

Monitor Closely

If anything looks off - discoloration, thinning, or unusual patches - contact a turf-grass professional right away. Early intervention can prevent costly problems.

Caddyshack makes the entire process simple by tracking your watering schedule, handling fungicide and nutrient applications, and reminding you when it’s time to adjust irrigation.
